Ombre for Baby! A Quick Quilt Idea by Caroline!

Simple. Stylish. Super easy. That's kinda what we're all about these days. Obviously less isn't always more but sometimes it sew is, like with this adorable tutorial that Caroline created for a Baby Ombre Quilt! If you're looking to make an inexpensive baby gift, this quilt is perfect for you! It's so modern and gender neutral that any mother will love seeing her little one cozying up with it or napping on top of it! If you have zero time before that baby shower you're attending this weekend, it can easily be created in an afternoon.

Caroline was inspired by Vanessa Christenson's ombré baby quilt using her awesome ombre solids from the collection Simply Color and decided to make a similar one with half-square triangles. I love how it ended up looking like an ombré chevron.. kind of on accident!
The final measurement of this quilt is 36" x 36" (but can easily be made larger for an adult size!)

What you'll need (for the quilt top only):
1 1/4 yards of Vanessa Christensen's ombré fabric in grey
Rotary cutter//mat OR scissors
Sewing machine
Coordinating thread
Pencil OR chalk pencil

Isn't this adorable?? And SEW simple! It's the best when you can create something totally unique with just a little time and imagination! You can get the full instructions for this project, including backing and binding size and how she quilted it over on Caroline's Blog!

Happy Earth Day!

Happy Earth Day (and Monday) everyone!! We hope you're enjoying gorgeous weather and the beauty of Spring on this wonderful day, remembering how amazing the planet that we live on truly is! Color and texture is all around us and we quilters, sewers and fabric crafters understand better than anyone that these are the small yet incredible things that bring us the most happiness and joy! So celebrate our world today by stopping and smelling those rose (or bluebonnets if you're lucky enough to find yourself in Texas), looking up at the sky just a little longer than usual or opening up the window in your sewing room and breathing the fresh air just a little deeper and with a LOT of thankfulness!

Cute & Safe fun in the Sun!!

It's almost that time of year again! Where every day is spent out and about, soaking up the Summer Sun and enjoying life outdoors! Whether you and your family spend the weekends up at the lake, are taking a vacation to a fabulous beach or if you and the kids plan to spend every day poolside...you DEFINITELY need to keep sun protection in mind! As well as looking too hip for words but that's OBVIOUSLY a priority around here!

Grab yourself a fabulous Summer print like a nautical stripe or something bright and bold! Just make sure you LOVE it! And whip some super cute Summer gear to keep your little one cute and comfy out in the sun! The Amelia & Me Sun Hat Pattern by Fig Tree & Co. is perfect for keeping the sun out of little eyes and off delicate face and neck skin! And make a pair of sturdy diaper covers to match using the Too Cute to Boot Pattern and baby is ready for anything the Summer day brings!!

Bekko Thin Stripe Navy - Sateen  Bekko Swirl Tangerine - Sateen   Bekko Parquet Grass - Sateen

Try using one of the Bekko Home Décor Sateens to create these super cute projects! Pam just made an awesome quilt using some of these and they are SO soft! You can tell they are sturdier than a quilting cotton but they aren't any more stiff or coarse! The thickness would even make that sun hat a little less floppy than a normal cotton!

Baby Bib FREE PATTERN from Heather Bailey!

We just LOVE when designers share some of their inspiration with us all for FREE!! So when Karen sent me the link for this adorable Baby Bib designed by the adorable Heather Bailey on her blog HELLOmynameisHeather, I figured I had to share! This sweet little bib is a fab idea for creating some cute handmade baby gifts! You could create several in some super fun fabrics so baby can eat in style whenever Mom has them out on the town. You could also make it part of a themed basket, with a burb cloth, blankie and maybe a cute pair of diaper covers all in coordinating fabrics!!

You could even bring a bunch of fabrics and trims plus several copies of the template Heather made for this project to a Baby Shower and have all the guest make them as a fun and useful alternative to the typical shower games!!

Fun Under the Big Top with Bailey by Maude Ashbury!

There are few things more whimsical than the circus and we've all been so tickled to see more and more circus themed collections hitting the market! Michael Miller has definitely been on top of this trend just like they ALWAYS ARE! But we are totally smitten with this new grouping called Bailey by Maude Ashbury for Blend Fabrics! Everything from the elephants to the big tops and stripes and balloons in between, these fabrics are absolutely darling! Perfect for creating a nursery or little ones bedroom! It would even be precious as clothing! Cute rompers, jumpers and skirts for the girls...shorts, ties and button ups for the boys! TOO CUTE.

Pam got inspired and whipped up this awesome quilt real quick and its absolutely to die for!! I LOVE the ticket print she used for the border! It really makes the whole thing pop! When thinking of a way to use that favorite new collection, don't rule out designing something YOURSELF! It's fairly simple if you keep your blocks big and easy...also, graph paper is your very best friend!!

But if you're just feeling like making a quick quilt this weekend, grab the FREE PATTERN designed for this collection and get to sewing!! I really like the inner pennant border! Very whimsical and still, not very difficult at all! Wouldn't this make a wonderful baby shower gift?? Especially if you paired it with a few handmade blocks made with your left over fabrics!
(I found a GREAT TUTORIAL for baby blocks over on Sew Like My Mom!)

Bring the charm of the circus into your little one's life with Bailey!! And share your projects with us!

Make it WILD with Field Study by Anna Maria Horner!

I just LOVE this gorgeously striped, cheetah print named Amelia from Anna Maria Horner's most recent fabric collection, Field Study!! It's so dimensional with the stripes of dark and light highlighted with pops of citron! At first it might escape you what to do with something so unique as this, but my motto is...when in doubt, build your project around the fabric you love!  This is TOTALLY not a fabric you'd normally find in my wardrobe...I wear a lot of basics and earth tones. But since it has an array of neutrals in it, I just knew it would look awesome with some simple wardrobe staples like my denim button up or a simple black tank top (once it warms up a bit anyways!) So I decided to make a very simple, straight lines only maxi skirt and my goodness it has turned into one of my favorite things in LIFE!! And yes, you could DEFINITLEY create Caroline's Tank Dress with this print and a black or chocolate brown, or EVEN GRAY tank...HOW CUTE WOULD THAT BE???

Once Caroline got a peek at my skirt, she had to create an Abby Bag for her Class Sample out of this to-die-for fabric and it really turns this design by V & Co. into a show stopper! That solid citron bow is just too perfect! This is a great way to bring an amazing fabric into your life that seems at first to be a little out of your comfort zone! By rocking that print on a fabulous every day bag, you get the affect without rocking your style boat TOO much! Not that we don't like encouraging bold choices and following your heart when it comes to fabric, we also know its all about baby steps! It's hard to believe that when I first started working at the Cabbage Rose, all I wanted to use was Fig Tree Fabrics! My, how tastes DO change! ;)

Field Study Blueberry   Field Study Dream   Field Study Amethyst

There are even more FABULOUS prints in this collection, you could totally design one-of-kind bedding and room décor using these and accenting with pretty solids for a wild and bohemian look that you will never tire of staring at! What have you made with Field Study?? Share your pictures with us! Or come into the shop and show us what you're working on! We'd love to see it!!

Happy Sewing!

PS! Don't forget our April Sew Fresh Meeting is THIS THURSDAY from 6-9pm in the Cabbage Rose Classroom! The girls will be sewing the night away, sharing projects and starting new ones so come make a mess with us!!

Fat Quarter Project with Urban Mod!!

As you all know, we all go pretty bananas over Art Gallery Fabrics! And it's not just because of their gorgeous color ways and totally hip designers putting out the freshest looking prints around...their fabric just feels different! It's so soft and luscious, you can't help but want to rub up against these fabulous fabrics which is why we adore them for fashion projects but they are too good to stop at our wardrobes! These are the types of prints and colors you want to be surrounded by, so I may have squealed a bit upon seeing this Fat Quarter Gang project on the Art Gallery Blog!!

Utilizing a store bought shower curtain, you can give it a completely "unique to you" look without having to buy TONS of yardage!

What you'll need:
12 - fat quarters of Art Gallery Fabrics (Urban Mod Collection)
a cotton standard shower curtain measuring 72"x72"
coordinating thread
sewing pins
rotary cutter/mat/ruler
cardboard or card stock for making the triangle template, marker, scissors

I just LOVE the modern look of adding this patchwork panel to a shower curtain and its just SEW SIMPLE! What a way to add some punch to your bathroom! How awesome would it be to make this cool shower curtain, then sew some fabric strips in your favorite of the fabrics to some coordinating towels to make a matching set? You can sew them to the natural band that comes on most towels in the same way you attach the patchwork panel to the curtain. I think it would be a great Dorm Warming gift for any College Freshmen who will be going away this Fall!

Get the full tutorial here! And be sure to share pictures on Facebook if you make one!! WE WANNA SEE!! Happy Sewing!

Sew Your Own Tank Dress with Caroline!

So, exactly 2 minutes after I posted yesterdays blog with super cute tutorials featuring Out to Sea fabrics by Sarah Jane, Caroline texted me that she was working on a project to post on her blog today using Out to Sea fabric as well!! Great minds really DO think alike! Or this collection is just certifiably AWESOME!! I think both are true so, moving on...who wants to make a TANK DRESS??

Actually, a better question would probably be who doesn't want to make a tank dress simply because less people would raise their hands and I get overwhelmed easily...okay, rambling OFFICIALLY over. This little outfit is super simple to put together and looks anything but! Perfect for throwing on for those last minute nights out with friends or just to look extra cute without any extra effort!

All you will need is:
A well-fitting Tank (Caroline's is from Target, $9)
About 2 yards of fabric,
Elastic thread & coordinating thread,
Scissors or rotary cutter & mat,
Ruler,
and Chalk!

Get the full tutorial over on Caroline's blog, Sew Caroline! She has TONS of creative DIY projects, style posts and more that you will be totally inspiring for you so go say hi!!

More Out to Sea Projects!

One of my FAVORITE collections that has come out in the past year was Out to Sea by Sarah Jane for Michael Miller Fabrics! There was just something so whimsical about her assortment of nautical themed prints that totally captured my heart! I even made myself a Perfect with Pockets Skirt with one of the Anchor Prints which turned out fabulous! But this nautical quilt is just about killing me right now!

Sarah Jane got a little help from Amy over at Diary of a Quilter to bring us a full tutorial for this adorable design! I am absolutely smitten by the clever use of the panels and those adorable flag blocks...and using that stripe for a bias binding?? TOO PERFECT! This little quilt would be so precious as a crib quilt, maybe in an entire nursery decorated in this collection!! Or hung on the wall in your little pirate's room! You can see the full tutorial here!

Please tell me. HOW.CUTE.IS.THIS????? I am just about in love with this adorable little sailor dress! I could totally see a themed photo of the kiddos in outfits made from these great fabrics since there are lots of cool coordinates that would make adorable button up shirts or shorts for the boys, and obviously simple skirts or dresses for the girls! (FULL DRESS TUTORIAL HERE)

Sometimes going through some of the recent collections of the past year is so fun! There's always more projects on the web after a line has been out for a little while so its great to revisit those favorite fabrics and be inspired all over again! I seriously need to make myself a skirt out of that navy sailboat print now...
