Patterns for Life - Laurel Dress by Colette Patterns

I know you may not believe me when I say this...but there IS such a thing as a perfect pattern. What qualifies for such a lofty adjective you ask? Well here are my criteria for what makes a pattern, perfect!

1. It has well-written directions/easy to follow
2. It is fairly quick to create
3. It can be made in lots of fabrics for not a lot of fabric
4. Lots of potential customizations and easy-to-make adjustments
5. Actually fits (and FEELS GOOD to wear)
6. I want to make it again

And you guessed it...I'm here to show off a pattern that fits ALL those requirements! Incredible isn't it? Well I've learned to expect to incredible from the design mind behind Colette Patterns, Sarai Mitnick because every time this lady releases another pretty pattern, I'm just floored! It usually starts of like "How hasn't anyone designed THIS before?"...sometimes genius is found in utter simplicity and with the Laurel Dress, there's no exception. This super simple yet totally chic shift dress is THE DRESS that belongs in every woman's closet so its definitely a little shocking that it took until 2013 (believe me, CAROLINE AND I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR YEARS) to get this perfect of a frock on the market...but I GUESS perfection can't be rushed!

All I'm saying is...this is the dress you can wear to any event, on any occasion, in any kind of fabric no matter what your body type!

Not only is it THE ONLY DRESS I've wanted to make in every one of my favorite fabrics (great for slashing your stash), but you can easily convert this design into a pretty and feminine blouse!

PLUS!! Sarai created this amazing and FREE bonus booklet with 9 different variations! The Extras Booklet is a totally free download (you don’t even need to buy the pattern), and includes a Basics sections with full instructions on making and using bias tape, plus photo-illustrated instructions for creating any of the variations you see, and even a few extra small pattern pieces to help! Here are some of my favorite variations!

As you know, if its an incredible new dress pattern, our girl Caroline will be the first to try it out! And she absolutely LOVED it!! She used a gorgeous hand painted print from Tangier Ikat by Dena Designs for Free Spirit Fabrics and my goodness, it came out totally gorgeous! Proof that you can go BIG with prints when creating Laurel, something Caroline was a little nervous about but totally got over once it was finished! I mean just look at that WOW of a dress! She had some adjustments to make for her figure (you can read about those here) but it was all super easy, looks amazing on her and its comfy to wear!

So, have I inspired you yet?? Seriously if you're not heading to the Cabbage Rose to pick out some new fabric and purchase this pattern RIGHT NOW, I don't know what you're doing with your life!! Okay that was a bit strong, but still! This dress is just dying to made a million different ways and get lots of wear in your wardrobe! Make it in a solid with a little extra detail if you can't see yourself making a dozen of them...you will get so much mileage out of a navy or black shift dress! Add a little ruffle detail to the neck and you fancy!

I'll be sharing another design that's knocking our socks off later this week so stay tuned and...
HAPPY SEWING!!

Draft + Sew a Custom Circle Skirt with Caroline!

So if you haven't popped over to the Sew Caroline blog in awhile, I think you'll all be thrilled to see what she has recently cooked up! None of us has that hard of a time keeping up with the trends, I mean, you do have to walk by all those cute clothes at Target anyways! And if you've paid attention at all, you know circle skirts are EVERYWHERE! Mini, midi and everywhere in between, circle skirts are IN right now. And wouldn't you know,  Caroline just wrote a 4-part series on her blog on how to draft AND sew your very own custom circle skirt.

That's right ladies. A custom fit. Like, perfect for you!!

And all it take is just a little bit of measuring, math (don't worry...she did all the formula work, you just put your measurements in), a quick bit of sketching, cutting and of course, sewing and you're on your way to a brand new skirt, honey! In WHATEVER fabric is tickling your fancy! Caroline used a beautiful Bari J. print from her collection Lily Belle and my, oh my, it just turned out perfect! Amazing fit Caroline! You can achieve it too! Just head on over to Sew Caroline and walk yourself through the 4 simple parts!

Pattern Feature: The Staple Dress by April Rhodes

I don't know about you but I have been on the lookout for a very specific, very simple dress pattern for ages and I think the search was finally over once I laid eyes on The Staple Dress by April Rhodes! It reads classic and modern at the same time and I'm pretty sure there will be 5 of these in my closet by the end of the Summer.

This dress has a lot of ease to the fit through the bus and hips while the shirring at the waist creates a flattering silhouette for any figure! You can create it with a classic straight hem or with the dramatic and trendy drop hem! Pockets are also an option, but c'mon...who wants a dress without pockets?

The Staple Dress can truly be worn anywhere depending on what fabric you use! I love the look of an eyelet, but it would be an awesome every day dress made in a neutral jersey! This is a great pattern to give a beginner seamstress or just anyone wanting to begin sewing for themselves, they will get SO much mileage out of this pattern and the simplicity should make fit a breeze!

You can get the pattern and see the fabric requirements here!

Happy Sewing!

Cute & Safe fun in the Sun!!

It's almost that time of year again! Where every day is spent out and about, soaking up the Summer Sun and enjoying life outdoors! Whether you and your family spend the weekends up at the lake, are taking a vacation to a fabulous beach or if you and the kids plan to spend every day poolside...you DEFINITELY need to keep sun protection in mind! As well as looking too hip for words but that's OBVIOUSLY a priority around here!

Grab yourself a fabulous Summer print like a nautical stripe or something bright and bold! Just make sure you LOVE it! And whip some super cute Summer gear to keep your little one cute and comfy out in the sun! The Amelia & Me Sun Hat Pattern by Fig Tree & Co. is perfect for keeping the sun out of little eyes and off delicate face and neck skin! And make a pair of sturdy diaper covers to match using the Too Cute to Boot Pattern and baby is ready for anything the Summer day brings!!

Bekko Thin Stripe Navy - Sateen  Bekko Swirl Tangerine - Sateen   Bekko Parquet Grass - Sateen

Try using one of the Bekko Home Décor Sateens to create these super cute projects! Pam just made an awesome quilt using some of these and they are SO soft! You can tell they are sturdier than a quilting cotton but they aren't any more stiff or coarse! The thickness would even make that sun hat a little less floppy than a normal cotton!

Pretty NEW Prints from Blend Fabrics!!

We've just been bombarded with gorgeous new fabrics in the shop for the past few weeks so pardon all the fabulous inspiration pictures we'll be posting as a result!! We've especially taken notice to the gorgeous and unique fabrics coming our way from Blend Fabrics!!

I am so enchanted by this organic, watercolor inspired collection Alchemy by the wonderful artist, Shell Rummel. Her love of the transparent color quality of her paintings spills over into pattern making and we just love the unique result! They are a bit more abstract than the usual print, but that's the element that makes this collection standout as so special!

The cool and calming tones and prints are perfect for creating a bedroom retreat or a soothing nursery with a subtle and modern feel. These muted colors are fabulous for letting your heirloom wood furniture be a focus, which still bringing in a beautiful hint of interest.

Try this lovely and simple hexagonal FREE QUILT PATTERN, Arcadian to really show of these wonderful prints!

And how pretty is Bella by Amanda Murphy??? These prints are bright, bold and lots of feminine fun!! Both the Buttercream and Seagrass colorways are fabulous! Wonderful for scumptous quilts, pillows and more!!

And isn't the Bella in Bloom FREE QUILT PATTERN just darling? How could you not wake up in a cheery mood with this little beauty draped over you?! If you need to bring a little extra sunshine in during this year's dreary winter months, this is collection for you!

We just love when new sources of beautiful fabric come out and we can't wait to see even more of the beautiful things the Blend designers will be doing in the future!!
