Oh haven't thought about this in years, but it was Capture the Flag. My home was on a lot and a 1/2, BIG lots, right on the corner. The neighborhood was full of grade school age kids, we'd have 20-35 kids at our big corner lot in 2 teams, and play Capture the Flag until it got too dark to see. We played Kicksocker with that big gang of kids too, but somebody would end up getting kicked in the shin or hit in the head by the ball, lol! I remember playing Capture the flag at dusk, in July, with the cicadas calling, the bats catching bugs overhead, and the lightening bugs blinking in the air. Thanks for the walk down memory lane!

Tough question. At 4-5 years - sitting on the cement floor in my Grandma's basement making jewelry from the buttons in her button box. At about 8-9 years old, cutting out models from the Wards or Sears catalog and designing clothes for my shoebox paper doll family. Then my favorite passtime was jacks which you could play alone or with a friend. But - have to say that my all-time favorite passtime that continues to this day is reading. (That's over 65 years of fun passtimes that have changed over the years.) Reading is now coupled with quilting - applique, pieced, and art quilts. My childhood continues!

If I hear laughter when I am on my front porch, then I will know you are reading my post. I was military brat and while my dad was stationed at Craig AFB in Selma, Alabama I discovered the base thrift store-aka home of old fancy party dresses. I bought a lovely green watermark taffeta with a scalloped neckline and also a butter yellow with chiffon overlay. Both dresses were of the fitted bodice and very full skirt style. I would choose one and slip it on over my swim suit and ride my bike to the base pool. A vision to behold, especially on the way home because I would stop by the library and load up on Nancy Drew mysteries.

When I was a kid (it seems so long ago), I loved to play pretend one- room school house. I would be the teacher and my brother and sister were my students. We had an enclosed front porch that was our school room and my grandfather (who was a school custodian) would bring us old text books that were going to be thrown out....even the teacher's additions with the answers! My favorite pastime was crafting! I learned to embroider, make woven potholders and smocked pillows when I was 5. But the MOST fun of all was making these "beautiful" poodles out of wire clotes hangers and colored dry clearner bags. I formed the bodies out of the wire and wrapped them with strips of bags. Then I made carnation flowers out of the bags and attached them to the dog in appropriate places to make the poodle cut. OHH they were wonderful. My parents actually let me sell those to their friends to decorate their houses. They must have been so proud! LOL

Ami, as I called her, couldn't drive, so we'd take the bus, wear white gloves and hats, and go shopping downtown. I remember that the elevator was manned by a gentleman in a uniform of sorts. We'd get lunch, have tea, shop and come home on the bus. Ami- you're such a lady- I fashion much of my life because of YOU!

I loved tromping around in the woods near my home and seeing what I could discover. Sometimes it was just a nice shady spot or a comfortable tree limb to sit and enjoy my latest favorite book. Sometimes it was a fantastic make-believe adventure with my sisters, cousins or friends. Always it was the feeling of freedom and excitement to be out and about.

My favorite past time was playing outside til the first parent whistled and every one scattered for home. I also loved going to the five and dime and getting some floss and embroidery project. Fun, lazy days.

My mother had (and still has and uses) a treaddle singer sewing machine. I remember her letting me put cards against the wheel as she was sewing and make noise and chat with her about things. As a little girl that began a love of sewing, knitting and cross stitch. We always were able to talk to each other about life! I enjoyed that time with my mom, and even now we cant just have a 10 minute call..it always last hours.

I would have to say one of my favorite passtimes was playing with a doll house that my Dad made for me one Christmas. My mom had made precious curtains and furniture for the house and they talked later of how much they had so much fun together planning out the "decor" of the house. It was a big hit on Christmas morning!!

Just about anything outside would have been my favorite past time. I always had to wait for Mom to be up before I could go outside, so the wait was always on, with two little Sisters. I remember watching the picture of the Indian on the TV, before "Captain Kangaroo" came on. I had no idea it was the TV station's logo before they came on the air in the morning. Sure do miss Mr Greenjeans!!

There was 6 of us kids in the house and we were are very active. Only 6 years between the oldest and the youngest. We used to use the big card boards from the bakery that brought in the bread on for forts or houses or we would climb the haystack and use them as a flying carpet.

Great blog and I enjoy your store. Hope I win.

My favorite pastime was probably playing house. I would dress up in some of my cousins old formals and high heels. I had a play kitchen and a Tiny Tears doll, so I thought my life was just pretty fine!!!!

My favorite childhood passtime was cowboys and Indians. Yes, I was a Tomboy. All my playmates from age 5-8 were boys. For my 5th birthday, my party gifts were a gun and holster, cowboy hat, and a sherrif's badge! We ran and played out doors all day, coming in when we were tired, hungry or the street lights came on. I later graduated to more ladylike passtimes, like learning to stitch! Thank goodness my mother taught me to do that.

Each summer from the time I was 9 I was allowed to spend about a month with my grandparents on their farm--I could wander the yards and edge of the fields around the house, pick blackberries, play house under the chinaberry trees using the berries and stems for whatever my imagination chose--and some evenings go to the pond fishing with a cane pole--either with my grandfather or sometimes with HIS mother--using worms for bait. Whenever I think about those times that warm, loved, contented feeling comes back.

My bestest friends lived next door. We would play in their basement in the summertime (no one had air-conditioning . We played paper dolls for hours on end. When we weren't playing paper dolls we were making clothes and more dolls. We used the penneys and sears catalogs for inspiration and any picture the right size was glued to cardboard to become a new character in our unending drama. Paper crayons and scissors were all we used.

I remember as a child making mudpies. To make our pies special, my friend and I would go to the nearby field, take an ear of corn and use the corn to decorate our mudpies. We would try to get my brother to eat them but he never would!

Quilting with Granny is the best of childhood memories. She was the only one who would believe that a 6year old could learn to quilt. Learning to sew, read, garden, weave and bake from her, were the most delightful experiences a child could have. I have 2 grandchildren that will learn these important skills from me.One has already learned to sew on the same machine that I learned on! How good that teaching sewing is one of my favorite skills that I learned from her. Isn't that what sewing is, a wonderfully contageous thing?!! Lisa D.

The quilt kit giveaway reminded me of growing up with my sister. She was always the "teacher" and I was always her student. At the age of 4 she taught me the alphabet and how to write some words. Peter Pan was one of my favortie books so, I wrote Peter Pan just perfectly on my stripped pillow case. Needless to say that was the last time I wrote on my mother's fabric!

Jacks! Definitely playing jacks was the best time for me, my sisters and friends. To add to the challenge we'd mix different size jacks and try different size balls, oh the memories.

What a fun quilt...and I love the tin it comes in almost as much as the quilt!!! Picnics at the park...rolling down a grassy hill to see who could get to the bottom first...roasting marshmellows over fall leaves burning fires...I had a great childhood..so many memories!!

I loved to sit on the floor beside my mother as she sewed strips of fabric end to end to make braided rugs. I would help roll the fabric strips into balls to keep it from getting all tangled up.

I remember my mom sewing clothes for me and the teachers commenting on what a good seamstress she was (of course, I had no idea WHAT they were talking about since I was in early elementary school). My mother died when I was in 4th grade. Maybe that's why I love the styles from that period and why I enjoy sewing so much.

My brother and I would play "city" in the yard on our bicycles. The mailbox would be the post office, a tree was drive through window for fast food, the carport was our parking garage, and the house was an apartment building. We would "run errands" for hours and have a lot of fun. (If only errands were so fun now!)

When I was a child growing up I lived with my Grandparents James and Martha Horseman who made and sold quilts for a living. My grandmother would piece them together and my grandpa would quilt them. People from all over the country would bring quilts for him to sew for them. I would help him put the quilts in the frames and help my grandma cut quilt pieces out.

I came from a very large extended family. On the weekends we would all gather at Grandma Minnie's. All the kids would play and the adults would sit under the shade trees and talk, play domimoes, or work on someone's car. I have so many good memories from those visits! I also had two Aunts that made their livings by sewing for the public. They would let Kenny and I make covered buttons for them. The Button Press was mounted on a table so we had to stand on a stool and pull the huge handle down to make the fabric cover the button form. We thought we were BIG STUFF!!

One of my most favorite memories is going to grandma's house. She would let me organize and play in her sewing cabinet. There were all kinds of buttons and trims and tools. I now have that cabinet in my home, still full of her things.

My favorite passtime was playing "house" with my best friend, Linda. We had neighbor playhouses made and had lots of dolls to take care of. We both were crafters and loved to sew. Even then we made some cute things. When alone I would read for hours and still do when I have time. This quilt would make a perfect reading quilt for my granddaughter. I love your store and am looking forward to the new one.

Oh that is such a cute quilt. My favorite childhood pasttime was reading the encyclopedias at my Grandmas when I was really little. Well at the ripe, young age of 90, we lost her this year. She didn't have alot but wanted me to have the encyclopedias. Alot of sentimental value there and one of my favorite things.

My most cherished, childhood memory was when my Busha (Grama) came to live with us oh, the fun we had. She was an avid stitcher & would make those very lrg dish towels up by stitching the days of the wk & many more different kinds. We would sit down in the evening every night & she would show me how to start out & from then I was hooked. We were always close & this is where I begun to sew more & more I guess I can say that I inherited this from her & now I'm teaching my grandson's to do the same thing & I'm so very proud of them.

I was the last of seven children, so my favorite memories are when we would all get together in the evenings or on holidays and listen to stories from my parents growing-up. I guess family is the best and I am so blessed with my wonderful hubby of almost 40 years and two great kids. This quilt brings out many of my childhood memories...I didn't say the good old days...it would be a treasure to make and share. I love your shop! Mary
