Support Brick & Mortar Shops, Visit Your Local Quilt Shop TODAY!!

Even though online shopping is amazingly convenient  we know how much you all LOVE being able to go into a physical quilt shop for ideas, inspiration, and information!! Not to mention to be able to see all the NEW Fabric's prints and color in person! The shades are never exactly right on our computer screens are they?? You really just can't beat actually being able to go into a brick and mortar shop in order to match or coordinate color palettes, compare print scales, or find that unexpected fabric that works just perfectly!

The tactile and sensory experience of being inside a fun little fabric haven is another element of the physical store that we couldn't imagine our lives without!! Seriously every time I walk into our store, even though I've walked through those doors hundreds of times, it's still so refreshing and inspirational! The color, the creations...you won't leave our shop without AT LEAST a dozen new project ideas! Browsing through our Patterns, there's about a 30 that I have on my wishlist and cannot wait to try! But sometimes getting all the supplies still isn't enough to get us motivated is it?

And that's where our Classes come in...a place where sewers can come and spread out with their machines and their projects and create with others is such a blessing and all of our students come away with new skills plus an invigoration for creating which is something all of us at the Cabbage Rose are very passionate about! Sometimes we just need someone else to say "YOU CAN DO THIS!" or to simply do it with us to get ourselves creating! And when you come to a Class at the Cabbage Rose, you get the support and direction you need to tackle that project that you've been wanting to try! The ability to create is so rewarding for everyone and we love seeing people's creative voice develop as well as being able to encourage others in their journey! Our teachers are especially gifted at this! With classes for kids who have never sewn before, aspiring quilters and handmade fashionistas, there's something for everyone!

We are so excited there's now an official day to celebrate just how fabulous it is to have a resource like a local quilt shop around and we hope all of you in the DFW area can make it to the Cabbage Rose today to celebrate with us! The Girls will be doing some fun DEMOS all day starting at 12pm so grab an early lunch with some friends and then come spend the day with us!! PLUS, our 15th Anniversary SALE is still going on so ALMOST EVERYTHING in the store is 15% OFF!!! Come see what's new in the shop, learn a cool technique or scoop up some new goodies for less TODAY for VISIT YOUR LOCAL QUILT SHOP DAY!!!

Make it with Caroline in 2013!!

This year is already off to an incredible start with all of the new Classes we already have scheduled this season! We have new teachers  as well as new classes from our veteran teachers, meaning 2013 is going to be as fresh as can be at the Cabbage Rose! Especially with all of the fun fashion and home decor classes that Caroline Hulse has going on! The Gum Drop Pillow Class was a hit last year and she's offering lots of dates in the next few months including NEXT SATURDAY, January 26th from 1:30-5:00pm and the FOLLOWING THURSDAY EVENING, January 31st from 5:30-9:00pm. Caroline scheduled all of the dates for this class on Saturdays or Thursday evenings to give more of you the opportunity to take it! So sign up today and learn how to make this cool Amy Butler pillow for your home!

The next class of Caroline's that will come up on the Calendar is the Abby Bag Class on Thursday, February 7th from 5:30-8:30. This bag is an awesome every day accessory big enough to hold all of those daily essentials without being overly huge! You want to wear a bag, not have it wear you am I right?? Well in our opinion, the Abby Bag by V & Co. is the perfect happy medium size. Plus, the bow doubles as a cool cotton scarf, a sweet accessory to rock over a simple tee and jeans while toting your brand new Abby Bag! This is a great simple tote for those who would like to create something interesting but don't have the patience for super intricate bag construction! More dates here!

Now if you want to talk about versatile, we can't leave out this sweet and chic tunic by Sew Liberated! In the Schoolhouse Tunic Class you'll learn this beginner pattern that will give you so much bang for your buck! Easy to construct and totally flattering, you can wear it as a tunic over colored jeans or fun leggings or paired with a coordinating tank top and worn as a dress! Once you know how make one, you'll have to make another in that new fabric you just fell in love with! Her first date for this class is Monday, February 11th from 10:00am-3:00pm and she has one scheduled each month through May which you can see here!

And if you are a brand new sewer, you won't want to miss the Perfect with Pockets Skirt Class! This full  and flirty skirt is flattering on everyone, is SO easy to make AND it has pockets!! How fun is that?? You can do a paper-bag or simple waistline and create totally different looking skirts in your favorite prints of the season! Easy to dress up or down, you might just start LIVING in your Perfect With Pockets Skirts! Caroline sure has!!! The first date for this class is Friday, February 8th from 1:30-3:30pm with another chance to take it each month through May! See all of the dates here!

AND if you have a young one that would like to learn how to sew, Caroline is teaching an After-School Sewing Series for ages 7-12 starting in February, meeting ever Tuesday from 3:45-5:00 for 4 weeks in which they will complete 3 projects giving them basic sewing skills and the confidence to keep going on their sewing journey! If you have a little one who would love to learn how to sew this year,  then we would love to have them take part in this fun new series! There will be 4 classes, each meeting on Tuesdays afternoons from 3:45-5:30pm, in which students will learn basic sewing skills with each of the projects featured! No prior sewing experience is required, they will learn great basic sewing skills! Moms and Grammies can make their weekly trip to Cabbage Rose after school on Tuesdays and shop while your kiddo  learns to sew!

Here is what we will be making!

February 12th: Infinity Scarf

Pablo Strikes Again!!

Check out this FAB quilt that Pablo just made!! He is really getting us all inspired to think outside the box all while keeping things simple, easy and totally cool!! We have had just a couple of the fun prints from Ty Pennington's Impressions 2012 collection that didn't really seem like enough to make a quilt with but leave it to a man to try and prove the ladies wrong! ;)

Pablo grabbed the few bold prints, threw in a coordinating solid or two, added an Amy Butler print for good measure and whipped out this fast and modern quilt that is just jaw-dropping good! The way he did the borders is a great trick for adding some width to a small quilt pattern to make it larger, or to build size when you're low on yardage! I also LOVE that he did a little fussy-cutting on that hexy stripe to make the center strip look like the inverse of the two strips framing the top and bottom! Such a clever move to get more bang out of a bold, large-scale fabric!

He even got super fancy and used all the prints he had left over to make a big wonky patchwork backing instead of trying to get enough of one fabric for the whole thing!! And let me just tell you, this quilt is crazy good and it looks even cooler in person!

SO, what can we learn from this awesome project???

1. Just because there are only a few prints left, doesn't mean you can't make an AMAZING quilt
2. When in doubt, bring in the SOLIDS
3. A little fussy-cutting on a big print goes a LONG way
4. Low yardage is an opportunity to think outside the box! If you LOVE a fabric, DON'T LET IT GO!!
5. Pieced backings are economical & cool, NEVER worry about finding enough backing again!

We hope we've inspired you to use fabric in a new way or to create something fabulous with that small grouping of prints you snagged the last of! Quilts with a lot of prints are wonderful, but we also love the modern and fresh look of Pablo's and other quick quilts like it! And if you LOVE projects like this that anyone with some imagination can do, SIGN UP FOR SEW FRESH! Our first sewing night of the new year is this Thursday from 6pm-9pm and we're going to be doing tons of fun stuff like this all year long! Come and  share the inspiration!!

Happy Sewing!!
